Hello,

We are experiencing quite a bit of PEEP high alarms. We do not currently use an expiratory filter in line, as the vendor stated that this would be per our discretion and even somewhat advised against it (due to condensation build up in the filter = frequent filter changes = more breaking the circuit).

Actions we have taken:
- emptied condensation from the circuit
- if draining condensation didn't work, checked diaphragm on expiratory valve and removed excess condensation
- if 2nd step didn't work, we replaced the expiratory valve/housing completely as condensation was still noted in the actual housing (before the diaphragm)
- recalibrate the flow sensor

Any suggestions anyone?

Drager vent right? Do you see the auto peep on the waveforms? and if you do an expiratory hold is the peep high

What circuit are you using?

We have condensation problems with both the Evita Xl and our new Savina 300. We use F&P circuits- RT 210 routinely, change to the RT240 when water issue is unsolvable. We use a double-walled expiratory filter sometimes, to try to insulate more at the expiratory port, but I think more often that just slows expiratory gases down and allows them to condensate more. Because the problem seems variable shift to shift, room to room, I think it is more related to room temperature and air flow in the rooms. Have the issue that febrile pts need a cooler room - as a continuing battle - and we are arguing that we need to turn the temp up to prevent so much rain out. Again, it is sporadic - so it's something the therapists just have to be mindful of, watch for auto-peep, change or DC filters as needed.
